Creating a better "First Impression" with new railway sleeper raised beds

Elstree and Borehamwood Town Council has been a member of the "First Impressions" project since it started 7 years ago. This group has sought to make the streets of Borehamwood more attractive by adding high impact visual designs with a film and TV theme.
Earlier this year the Town Council pledged support to construct a raised flower bed from railway sleepers. The operator of Elstree & Borehamwood railway station (GTR) was so impressed that it asked for another three railway sleeper raised beds to be added to the station forecourt.
Staff from the Town Council helped offload, transfer and assemble the railway sleepers, as well as moving compost and topsoil to fill the beds. GTR and Hertsmere Borough Council lent a hand with cleaning and tidying up the site, and members of the Youth Council joined other Volunteers to plant the new beds and complete the transformation,

RailwaySleepers.com Says..

Was it worth the effort? A resounding "YES". It's great to see a community coming together for a joint project.  Not only is there that uplifting experience of sharing and working together, but also through bringing plants, railway sleepers and landscaping onto the streets of Elstree and Borehamwood, there is a real transformation to the environment. Very impressive and heartwarming.

By the way, I like the last picture of the stack of railway sleepers that have just been loaded onto the pavement, before construction of the raised beds. A passing suited office worker has clearly seen it as a Council 'facility' for his briefcase and business phone call. A portable office!
