St Mary's Secret Garden - raised beds from new railway sleepers

Please find attached a couple of photo's of the railway sleeper beds in situ. They were all erected over a 2.5 day period by people with long term health issues and disabilities for a housing estate near our community garden.

Bryant Court is a block of flats with a big green space that is hardly used by tenants. We are part of an initiative to encourage the residents to use this space more which includes the railway sleeper raised beds and nice seating areas using reclaimed materials.

Later in March we are going back for a community planting day that will see me working with the tenants to plant lovely fruit bushes, fruit cordon trees, herbs and some vegetable seeds. A finished photo will come after the day.

Oh a little tip, from a retired cabinet maker, that worked for us that you may want to pass on, if you coat the self tapping screws with candle wax they screw it a lot easier (something to do with a more even heating up of the screw that reduces expansion of the screw!). Thanks.

Many thanks for the photos and the description of your project, not to mention your candle wax tip. Much appreciated. It's great to see your community project taking shape, and congratulations to all concerned. It will be great to see more pictures after you have planted up the railway sleeper raised beds.
