JILL & DAVE'S RAILWAY SLEEPER RAISED BED PROJECT

JILL & DAVE'S RAILWAY SLEEPER RAISED BED PROJECT

Great to see what they have both created with their Jarrah railway sleepers. As they discovered they are really heavy, being dense tropical hardwood timbers, and can be a real struggle to move into position. That's where their improvised way of wheeling them into place comes into its own! Jill wrote: 'My husband struggled a little with the weight so as would any true engineer he knocked together a pair of wheels (see photo). Other than that it all went smoothly. Even the dog had fun!'

REMEMBER TO LOCK UP your 'shabby chic' plinths made from oak railway sleepers!

Sometimes our children can be slightly sniffy about our handmade creations, and it is rare that they harbour any excitement about using them for their own 'perfectly designed' homes. Clearly Paul's quirky oak columns have ticked a unique box, and are a definite success, although one he may not be able to savour for long if his daughter has any say in it. Keep them under lock and key!

RUSTIC SHELVING WITH VERY OLD TROPICAL HARDWOOD RAILWAY SLEEPERS

RUSTIC SHELVING WITH VERY OLD TROPICAL HARDWOOD RAILWAY SLEEPERS

These ancient hardwood railway sleepers are as weathered and worn as you can get. They've had more than sixty or seventy years of snow, rain, wind and sun, not to mention endless trains and carriages running over them. Some people might judge them as too battered, too far gone and fit only for the fire. But Sue has seen in their crumbly exterior a unique weathered piece of beautiful timber that deserves pride of place in her home. Rustic shelving that openly declares its character and age. Wonderful.
