HOW TO A BUILD A WALL AND STEPS AROUND A PARKING AREA WITH USED HARDWOOD RAILWAY SLEEPERS

Many thanks to Ben and Jerry for the brilliant step by step photos of their excellent railway sleeper project, and the really useful advice they have shared. Many projects involve learning as you go along, and so any knowledge or discoveries from other people who have already trodden the same path is warmly welcome!

RAILWAY SLEEPER BLOCKS TOILET DOOR - Police and Fire crew called

Emergency teams have expressed their frustration after a "silly prank" left them with an unnecessary call out, costing them time and resources. A toilet attendant alerted police to a locked cubical in the West Bay Car Park, just south of Bridport. Worried that someone may have been taken ill, he called the police who then called the fire and ambulance teams. Once the fire teams arrived they removed the toilet door to find that part of an old railway sleeper was lying and blocking the other side. Posting on their Facebook page, Bridport Police wrote: "A silly prank has led to the unnecessary call out of the emergency services today to the 24 Hour toilet in the West Bay Car Park......

Ahead of the game and raring to go!!

Nothing like constructing landscaping projects whilst staying dry. A brilliant idea to construct railway sleeper raised beds in advance from the comfort of your own garage, when it's pelting down with rain outside, and oozing with mud. Once springtime arrives, you'll be ahead of the game and raring to go!

Aaron's impressive landscaping with old Dutch oak railway sleepers

It's inspiring to see pictures of Aaron's impressive railway sleeper project. The weathered character of the Dutch oak railway sleepers creates a warmth and solid uniqueness to his landscaping, that is highlighted when bathed in sun. All credit to him.

Building a vegetable bed from new British pine railway sleepers, at the very TOP of a garden

Building a vegetable bed from new British pine railway sleepers, at the very TOP of a garden

It's really great to see what Mark has created, and especially interesting to see all his preparation work, including the fixing of the plastic grid mats, as a base for the railway sleeper raised beds. All credit to him for carrying the railway sleepers up such a steep garden. No mean feat. Hopefully his vegetable beds will reward him with a bountiful harvest next year, that wipes away the memories of his aching muscles!

DETERMINATION IN THE SNOW! RAISED BEDS CREATED FROM AZOBE RAILWAY SLEEPERS

DETERMINATION IN THE SNOW! RAISED BEDS CREATED FROM AZOBE RAILWAY SLEEPERS

Many thanks to Tom for the useful information about how he approached his excellent project and for all the brilliant photos. He describes vividly the reality of cutting and drilling such a tough and resistant tropical hardwood railway sleeper, and his perseverance is there for all to see. Many would have thrown in the towel and swapped them for new softwood railway sleepers. But there again, they would have missed out on the challenge of creating such a durable piece of landscaping, and revealing the beauty of such a gorgeously grained tropical hardwood timber. I love the picture of his project continuing in the snow. That definitely shows determination!

TOM'S INDESTRUCTIBLE WOODEN MALLET MADE FROM AN OLD AZOBE RAILWAY SLEEPER

TOM'S INDESTRUCTIBLE WOODEN MALLET MADE FROM AN OLD AZOBE RAILWAY SLEEPER

I love the idea of a virtually unbreakable mallet. It sounds like something that a superhero would use in a Marvel comic. Thor and his everlasting hammer! It certainly reflects the nature of Azobe timber, (also known as Ekki, Ironwood & Bongossi) that is said to be the hardest industrially used wood in the world. Railway sleepers used from this tropical hardwood tend to last for decades without any treatment, and even when they have outlasted their railway life, they have wonderful other usages, ranging from landscaping to furniture, and magical bullet proof mallets!
