The notice says "Beware tar on sleepers" for our open day visitors. By scraping and burning I have managed to get most of it off, but it is a long messy job. The blackened sleepers are the ones I have cleaned. The shiny one
in the foreground is still oily because I could not get
at it with all the greenery.

You've made some superb raised beds, despite the ordeal... I guess that's the negative of using British sleepers that are tar and creosote treated, and tend to leak or become sticky in the summer. Pity, because they are so square and straight, and not too heavy to move, and look really good... as your beautiful raised beds show
