NIC & PHIL'S BEAUTIFUL PATIO WITH WEATHERED TROPICAL HARDWOOD RAILWAY SLEEPERS

We had a very old rotten decking area in the top corner of our garden. We cleared this away and planned to create a patio area which we could enjoy for many years and would not need replacing for quite some time. We purchased a selection of different lengths of the Tropical Hardwood Grade 1-2 railway sleepers from you and my husband set about creating a design which would allow for a large seating area along with planting beds to the rear and an area with a very large and heavy 'feature' stone.

We drew a plan based on the sizes of railway sleepers you had available to avoid unnecessary cutting of the railway sleepers. The plan did evolve however as the work progressed! Our first challenge was to get the very heavy railway sleepers around the house (which has quite a few steps - 22 apparently!) to where we needed them. A number of different friends were 'bribed' with beer and food to help!

As our garden is on a slight slope it was a a little challenging and took a few weekends from start to finish. We used the railway sleepers both horizontally and vertically to give the area more interest. My husband created and built the whole area himself but did need a couple of days help from a friend to lift some of the very heavy railway sleepers in place. We also used some of the railway sleepers as lawn edging alongside the new area.

The patio is in full sun all day but we didn't want to block out our amazing open sky views so we decided to use a landscaping pole as a temporary sail shade post for when we get the odd day of British summer! We store this in brackets above the railway sleepers on the side when not in use. Genius!! We are absolutely delighted with the finished result and I hope you like it too!
