The purpose of this project was to replace some 20 year old softwood railway sleeper walls, with a 4m high wall that would stand the test of time. We chose galvanised steel H beams & Azobe tropical hardwood railway sleepers, which look beautiful & are one of the most durable timbers in the world.
The steels were a massive 248kg each so we used a crane vehicle with an auger drill to both dig the 1.4m hole and lift the H beams into place. The secret is getting them all level, in line with each other & correctly spaced, which is very time consuming and involves a lot of fine tuning. Once they are concreted in, the slotting in of the railway sleepers is straightforward, although hard work. A crane or forklift definitely helps with lifting each 100kg railway sleeper into place. All in all, a tiring but very satisfying project.
