Adrian Prosser's Housing Project

260 new Baltic pine railway sleepers were used at a housing project in Catshill, Bromsgrove, to create retaining walls in a heavily sloping site.

An excellent example of using railway sleepers on a larger scale, to create terraces and usable garden space out of a seemingly impossible slope. Clearly, machines capable of earthmoving and digging trenches are essential, together with a clear sense of both design and construction. However the ideas used in this great project can also be used in a smaller scale to great effect.
The photos show the project almost finished, with piles of earth, bags and supporting battons still attached. The completed gardens will clearly look wonderful.
