Try lifting a 30kg 2.4m British pine railway sleeper. It's comfortable. Then try the oak equivalent at about 50kg. Still just OK. Finally try the 2.6m used tropical hardwood railway sleepers at 100kg. Whew, that's probably the absolute limit for most of us, except for Icelandic strongman Bjornsson who deadlifted a world record 501 kg in 2020. But even he couldn't lift our newest massive railway sleeper timbers (8.5m x 450mm x 270mm) that weigh in at 1,040kg per piece. Machines only, I'm afraid!

It's an understandable question. What can you do with a one ton railway sleeper that's 8.5m long? It requires a bit of creative imagination. Maybe you could use it to build a bridge over rapids, or an exciting open plan house extension, or support a daring elevated platform that leans out from a cliff edge. Maybe a tree top walkway, or a medieval trebuchet to hurl large boulders at pesky neighbours. It's a unique piece of timber and it requires an amazing project!
