Overview

USAGE:
Attaching a steel ground spike to a railway sleeper. Railwaysleepers.comSteel ground spikes, whether for straight edges or 90 degree corners, are useful for supporting low level railway sleeper walls, edging & raised beds and holding them firmly in place. A single steel ground spike is suitable for holding up to a 300mm high railway sleeper wall, edging or raised bed.

Step-by-Step Guide:
Lay the railway sleepers into place, ensuring that they are level and straight using a spirit level, tape measure or string line. It might help to place them in a shallow trench and add a layer of gravel for drainage and stability. Next, knock the steel ground spikes into the soil behind the railway sleeper with a hammer or mallet between 150mm and 300mm deep into the ground. Finally use heavy duty screws to fix the railway sleepers to the ground spike, using a drill or impact driver. Continuously check that each railway sleeper is straight and level with a spirit level, and adjust as needed.

LUNA'S TOP TIP:
Galvanised steel ground spikes for supporting railway sleepers. Railwaysleepers.comTwo ground spikes, laid directly on top of each other, and slid to the appropriate length, will create an adjustable fixing that will allow you to hold two layers of railway sleepers together, (up to 600mm high).

If you are planning a retaining wall that is higher than 2 railway sleepers and is holding back a substantial weight, you will probably consider using cut lengths of railway sleepers, that are concreted into the ground vertically, and will act as sturdy retaining posts. e.g. King's Landscaping's railway sleeper retaining wall. Alternatively you may use steel H beams and U channels.

Dimensions:
The straight edge steel ground spikes are 430mm long with a connecting plate of approximately 100mm x 80mm.
The 90 degree corner ground spikes are 430mm long with both sides of the connecting plate being 80mm x 60mm.

Fixings:
