Overview
A PERFECT BRUSH STROKE
A wide, thick paint brush is perfect for coating railway sleepers;
1) Applying woodstain, when you want to add that different shade or colour to your railway sleeper project. Maybe a cool chestnut brown or the boldest of blues for that vibrant and energetic atmosphere.
2) Sealing the cut ends of pressure treated railway sleepers with an end-grain sealant or wood preserver. Sealing cut ends helps prevent moisture ingress and extends the life of the railway sleeper.
3) Coating the surfaces of railway sleepers that are touching wet soil, e.g. inside raised beds and retaining walls, with a liquid water proof protection such as Everbuild's Black Jack 908, forming an impervious water and water vapour barrier.
4) Painting the bare steel of H beams to create a smarter and more stylish colour finish. Hammerite is a durable, corrosion resistant decorative coating for steel that can be applied directly onto rust by brush.

) Before painting, it's best to remove dirt, debris, and any loose material on the railway sleepers with a stiff brush or powerwash.

Harris Brushes began manufacturing paint brushes with a team of 13 in 1928 when the founder Leslie G. Harris was only 23. It now employs about a 1,000 people and is considered the largest brush manufacturer in the UK, with a large factory also in China.
FUN FACT
1) The largest paintbrush in the world, according to the Guinness World Records, is 11.52 meters (37.80 feet) long The brush weighs 77.56 kg (171 lbs) and was made in 2015 using bamboo and wood. It makes our 100mm (4") paint brush look rather puny. Mind you, paint coverage would be quick!
2) The largest painting in the world, as certified by Guinness World Records, is "The Journey of Humanity" by the British artist Sacha Jafri. It measures 17,000 square feet, roughly the size of 10 tennis courts. It was sold at a Dubai auction for $62 million.
3) The oldest painting in the world was found in Indonesia, in the Leang Tedongnge cave on the island of Sulawesi, in December 2017. It's a picture of a life-sized wild pig and is estimated to be at least 45,500 years old. Who knows, maybe your perfectly coated railway sleepers will be admired in thousands of years time!
