LEVELLING UP
Spirit level for railway sleeper landscaping. Railwaysleepers.comSpirit levels are perfect for quick, on-the-spot levelling checks and helping with the building of landscaping projects such as railway sleeper steps, walls and raised beds. Known also as ‘bubble levels’, ‘levels’ and ‘spirits’, they are commonly used in the construction industry as a simple yet crucial tool to indicate whether a surface is horizontal (level) or vertical (plumb). To effectively use a spirit level, you place the tool on the surface you're levelling. Adjust the surface until the bubble inside the vial aligns between the two guideline marks. For vertical testing, the same principle applies.

Ancient Egyptians and Romans first used basic levelling tools like plumb lines and water-filled tanks, however the actual spirit level was invented in 1661 by Melchisedech Thevenot, a wealthy Frenchman, royal librarian for King Louis XIV and an amateur mathematician and scientist. He noticed how, in order for a bubble in a tube of water (or spirit) to be positioned centrally, it required the tube to be mounted on a surface that was exactly horizontal. It was not until the early 18th Century that the spirit level is thought to have widespread use.

SPIRIT LEVEL DIMENSIONS
Spirit level used for railway sleeper landscaping. Railwaysleeper.scom1)The 900mm Kennedy Box Beam Level is ideal for landscapers and builders needing precise levelling, with three high-visibility vials (2 plumb, 1 horizontal) and an accuracy of 0.029° (0.5 mm/m). Made from a durable light alloy with an electrostatic powder coating, this level is easy to clean and built to last.
2) The 230mm torpedo spirit level ensures precise measurements with its three vials (horizontal, vertical, 45°) and high accuracy of 1.0mm/m. Its magnetic base allows for hands-free use on ferrous surfaces, enhancing convenience and efficiency. The impact-resistant ABS plastic body ensures durability, while the high-visibility yellow colour makes it easy to locate on busy job sites.

LUNA'S TOP TIPS
1) Take note of where the bubble is inside the spirit tube. If it is centered between the lines on the tube, your object is level. If the bubble is to the right of the lines, your object slopes downward right-to-left. If the bubble is to the left of the lines, your object slopes downward left-to-right.
2) Avoid knocking or dropping the Spirit Level as it can damage it and become inaccurate. There's nothing more useless than a wonky spirit level!

DID YOU KNOW?
1) How do they put the bubble inside the spirit level? A spirit level consists of a glass tube, known as a vial, that is partially filled with coloured spirit or alcohol, leaving an air bubble inside (so, the bubble isn't actually inserted, it is formed by leaving some alcohol out)
2) A spirit level gets its name from the spirit or alcohol solution inside the glass tubes.

FUN FACT
The longest commercial spirit level in the world is a telescopic level that extends to 379cm (approximately 12.4 feet).
