Overview

HOW LONG IS A PIECE OF STRING?
Apparently as long as you want it to be!
String lines are great for helping with designing railway sleeper raised bed designs. Railwaysleepers.comString lines are great for garden design. You can use a string line to visually mark out your railway sleeper project, so you can roughly see what it will look like and what space it will take up. You can even make it a little more permanent by spraying alongside the string with line marker. Effectively, a string line is just a length of string tied between small posts. You may be constructing raised beds and retaining walls that are completely straight and square, or you may be being creative with curved edges. Either way a decent string line is a great help.

Marking and levelling out railway sleeper raised bed projects. Railwaysleepers.comString lines are not only great for enabling straight lines, but also for calculating projects that need to be exactly level, such as railway sleeper retaining walls, raised beds or patios. For working out levels you will need string, stakes, a spirit level, and a hammer. First, drive the stakes into the ground at the corners or key points of your project. Then, attach the string to the first stake, pull it taut to the second stake, and secure it. Using a spirit level, ensure the string is level and adjust the height of the stakes or string as needed. If necessary, add more stakes or adjust the tension to ensure the line is straight and level.

LUNA'S TOP TIP
The best way of using a string line is to ensure it's properly tensioned. A tight string line provides an accurate reference for alignment and helps prevent sagging due to wind or gravity.

Skeleton from Chilean Museum. Railwaysleepers.comString was invented between 160,000 and 120,000 years ago. The oldest discovered fragment of string was woven by Neandertals as early as 52,000 years ago. The invention of string had a huge impact on human civilization. String was used for a range of practical purposes—fishing nets, fishing lines, bowstrings, rope for tying logs into rafts and thread for sewing clothes together. String tied stone points to spears and arrows. Early humans wove string together to create rope for lashing things to their backs or slinging them over a shoulder, making life more mobile and freeing arms for collecting or climbing.
