German Concrete Railway Sleepers in USA

05 September 2013

The German concrete railway sleeper manufacturer Rail. One is to construct a railway sleepers plant in Iowa, United States costing €15m. The factory is expected to be built by the end of the year and will have an annual capacity of 600,000 railway sleepers.

The company has set up a company called Rail. One USA which plans to market the railway sleepers to Class 1 railways. Rail. One's boss says about 22 million wooden railway sleepers are replaced annually in the USA, and he sees a general trend towards the use of concrete railway sleepers as they carry greater tonnages.
