ADRIAN'S STURDIEST OF BEDS MADE FROM RECLAIMED TROPICAL HARDWOOD RAILWAY SLEEPERS
Please find attached a few shots of what happened to the Australian Jarra railway sleepers I picked up from your yard. I used a 380mm chainsaw to cut them down, a 170mm disc sander to take off the first layer, a corded drill to make the holes, and a 200mm hand socket wrench to screw in the bolts. The railway sleepers are connected with 12mm coach bolts 200mm in length (heads sunk deep into first sleeper to ensure 90mm+ penetration into second sleeper). The wheels are screwed in with 5mm coach bolts. On the holes I didn't pilot deep enough, the 5mm coach bolts got so hot as I was screwing them in that they became soft and twisted off (see photo).
