SARAH'S REMOVAL OF LARGE HEDGE & BUILDING A RETAINING WALL WITH NEW PINE RAILWAY SLEEPERS

Thanks for the great service.  We have almost reached the end of our garden project and thought we would update you. In February we had professionals remove the huge conifer hedge that was taking over our garden and intruding into the neighbour's property. Naively, we thought we could just replant another hedge! Once the hedge was gone we got a bit of a surprise, not realising quite how much debris there would be between the properties! Being a perfectionist, I couldn't leave the boundary looking like that. After a lot of clearing and a lot of digging, we reached the original boundary edge and work on a retaining wall began.

We used a laser line to keep straight across the 16m length, and also to define the level of the shingle (as the ground was far from level). We chose the short pine railway sleepers just for ease of use - and also used railway sleepers for the uprights. We found Postcrete to be an amazing thing, and the TimberLok screws were excellent. To finish, we placed a plastic damp-proofing guard against the inside wall and shingled a drainage channel before re-filling the gap. The posts were sawn to the same height as the wall and a protective coat added. We now have the mammoth task of planting 45 hedge plants so we don't overlook our neighbour anymore!

I hope this will inspire some more garden projects!
