The Bridgetown district could not have thrived without the reliability of strong bridges to connect the north and south sides of the Blackwood river. This Bridgetown Road Bridge is about 130m long and 11m wide. Made from wooden poles it is the 5th bridge to be built in this location. The first Blackwood Bridge, was constructed in 1862, but was swept away by flood waters, as it neared completion. Two further bridges followed, with a stronger bridge in 1881 being built by convicts. The fourth bridge was built in 1936, and this fifth and current historial bridge was built in 1981, and unusually used timber at a time when wooden bridges were being phased out.
