Wherever you walk in Britain, following isolated footpaths that meander and criss-cross country streams and ditches, you will find tiny foot bridges made from used railway sleepers, that rescue you from getting your feet wet as you squelch through ankle deep mud. Simple, effective and much appreciated.

HORSING AROUND WITH RAILWAY SLEEPERS
A horse menage (or exercise arena) in Goadby Marwood, Leicestershire, with retaining walls made from used railway sleepers slotted into steel RSJs or H beams.Concreting vertical steel RSJ's into the ground like fence posts, and then sliding in new or used railway sleepers, is a simple, strong and long lasting way of creating a retaining wall. You'll find much tried examples of this in most farms in the country, side whether for silage bays, muck heaps or the sturdy walls of pole barns and cattle sheds.

Thanks to Andy for showing us what he has created with our reclaimed Australian tropical hardwood railway sleeper. The wrought iron supports contrast perfectly with the weathered and pitted finish of the old Jarrah railway sleeper, creating a dramatic and original piece of furniture for his lounge.

All credit to Charles and Fiona's determination to move 28 railway sleepers (with help from their old Fergie tractor!) Great refurbishment of their railway sleeper raised beds, yielding years of future crops. A really beautiful and peaceful walled garden.

Reclaimed railway sleepers have been used to create a sturdy picnic table and bench in Western Australia. There is something endearing and charmingly rustic about using old, battered and weathered railway sleepers to create a rickety outside table. Solid, chunky and timeless. So inviting for a cold beer, barbecue or chat with friends.

Australia is generally famous for boasting an outside lifestyle. Sport, leisure, beaches, barbecues and entertainment outside. So it's no surprise that there are wooden raised beds to be seen everywhere, made from reclaimed railway sleepers. In such a hot climate, bleached, weathered and battered railway sleepers seem to fit perfectly into the Australian landscape. Rough, ready and laid back.

In Nannup there is a sculpture carved from five upright railway sleepers by Bob Clarke, that harks back to the settler origins of this village in Western Australia. What an impressive and eye catching piece of sculpture that cries out to be admired and touched. So talented.

Perched on the sand dunes at Wells-next-the-Sea there is a flight of old railway sleeper steps that lead up to the National Coastwatch building that keeps an eye on swimmers and boats. Wells-next-the-Sea is one of the prettiest villages on the Norfolk Coast, with sweeping beaches, pine woods, and a bustling gorgeous harbour with small fishing boats and children with buckets fishing for crabs. The railway sleeper steps that are bleached by the sun and eroded by coastal wind and sand, blend perfectly into the rolling sand dunes. Like Wells itself, there is something natural and charmingly unspoilt about weathered reclaimed railway sleepers.
