Envy is never a useful or healthy pastime, but it is hard to resist such a moment of jealousy when faced with Barry's stunning paradise. He has such a gorgeous garden overflowing with railway sleeper paths and walkways. His choice of Azobe tropical hardwood railway sleepers is perfect as they are unbelievably tough and will last for decades whilst blending amazingly with shrubs and trees. Solid, beautifully weathered and a constant invitation to explore the infinite delights of his garden.

Owen has created really eye catching terraces of raised beds, using tropical hardwood railway sleepers slotted into steel I beams, and with more railway sleepers used as steps running up the centre. An attractive flowing design in a gorgeous weathered colour.

A sensitively made project that is perfectly in keeping with this established and beautiful setting. The railway sleeper design enhances, by gently adding different levels and wooden steps to the garden, without being overpowering or brash. The weathered railway sleepers appear as though they have been there for ever, despite your brilliant 'work in progress' photos showing otherwise. Great landscaping. https://www.railwaysleepers.com/projects/retaining-walls-with-railway-sleepers/skillfully-creating-different-levels-in-an-established-garden-with-reclaimed-railway-sleepers

Thanks to Barry for sharing his wonderful landscaping. A great collection of timber walls built from the 'champagne' of railway sleepers- Azobe tropical hardwood. Azobe is very heavy, very hard to cut, (although his professional bandsaw looks the business), and very durable. When new, the Belgium railway networks laid them down hoping for a potential life expectancy of up to 100 years. Their working life is now finished on the railway track, but at 50-60 years old they've still got some happy productive years left in retirement as they enhance Barry's beautiful Jersey garden!

I marvel at seeing the magical transformation of a roughly sawn oak railway sleeper to a beautiful, shining mantelpiece. A reward for hours of sanding, brushing, waxing and persistent polishing. A true labour of love.

As Michael says, a beast of a project, that is definitely something to be proud of and which will be admired by the railway sleepers community. The reclaimed oak railway sleepers provide such an effective and substantial way of levelling and retaining the sloping ground, and the 9ft king size bench looks majestic enough for 20 enormous hounds to hang out on. A great project, and one that is clearly approved of!

FIRSTLY, it's a great opportunity to support the D.E.C.'s Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal. However you might perceive the war in Ukraine, it is crystal clear that there is massive suffering, displacement & hardship, and so for every piece of Ukrainian oak sold we will donate £3. One online order for 20 railway sleepers will generate £60 of humanitarian support.
SECONDLY it's a chance to support a family sawmill in Ukraine that had to close when the war started, as they are situated close to both Kyiv and the Belarus border. When they started production again several months ago, they used returning lorries to bring back humanitarian aid. As they said at the time: 'Difficult times. We won't give up, and we will carry on to support Ukraine'.
THIRDLY it's a chance to buy wonderful new oak railway sleepers that are brilliant for those wanting a longer lasting alternative to softwood, with a crisp, clean and neat landscaping appearance that can look architectural and stylish. They are also from approved well managed forests. WIN, WIN, WIN!

What an impressive and imaginative use of reclaimed railway sleepers to create such an attractive seating area. James's pictures are a wonderful and meticulous step by step display of how he built his project and transformed a small functional area of his garden into a place of beauty. A curved magical oasis. All credit to him, his family and a definite inspiration to others.

What an impressive change to the garden. A great achievement, especially as all the work is done by Andy on his own. It always seems amazing how a chaotic pile of earth & scattered railway sleepers can become such a beautifully landscaped garden. Obviously there is a huge amount of hard graft, but there is also something almost magical about the transformation. I especially love the corner with the steps and different terraced levels of railway sleepers.

Old oak railway sleepers are perfect for both retaining and 'framing' different sections of the garden, whether seating areas, lawns or raised borders. They add a touch of aged charm and sturdy strength that is a striking contrast to the neat patio tiles or manicured lawn. To top it off, the chunky railway sleeper steps are a perfect connection between the different levels of the garden, and ooze with bold rustic character. All credit to Andy.
